Conflict Resolution Help:

Fair fighting rules are simple guidelines that help people handle conflict in a healthy, respectful way—especially in close relationships. Instead of yelling, blaming, or shutting down, fair fighting helps you solve problems without hurting each other.

Benefits of Using Fair Fighting Rules:

  1. Reduces yelling and hurtful words – Keeps things respectful, even when you're upset.

  2. Improves communication – You both feel heard and understood.

  3. Builds trust and safety – You learn to disagree without damaging the relationship.

  4. Solves problems more effectively – Clear, calm talk leads to real solutions.

  5. Prevents emotional wounds – Less regret, guilt, or long-term resentment.

How to Use Fair Fighting Rules in Daily Life:

  1. Choose the right time

Don’t fight when you're exhausted, distracted, or rushed. Say, “Let’s talk after dinner,” instead of in the heat of the moment.

  2. Stick to one issue at a time

Don’t bring up every past mistake. Focus on the current issue only.

  3. Use “I” statements

Say how you feel, not what the other person did wrong.

🗣 Example: “I feel hurt when I’m interrupted,” not “You never listen!”

  4. No name-calling or insults

Attacks damage trust. Speak with kindness, even when angry.

  5. Don’t interrupt

Listen fully. Let the other person speak without jumping in.

  6. Take breaks if needed

If emotions are running too high, take 20–30 minutes to cool off before continuing.

  7. Aim to understand, not win

The goal is resolution—not being “right.” Ask: What do we both need to move forward?

Example:

Instead of: “You always ignore me and don’t care!" Try: “I feel lonely when we don’t talk during dinner. Can we find time to connect?”

Using fair fighting rules doesn't mean conflict disappears—but it becomes safer, calmer, and more productive. It turns arguments into conversations that build your relationship rather than break it.
